Gold jewelry comes in varying karats or different levels of purity, which is what determines the value, durability, how and when you may wear it, and more.

Some of the most common types of gold jewelry are:

Solid Gold: 24 karat (24k), 18 karat (18k) and 14 karat (14k)

Gold Plated: Gold Vermeil, Gold Filled, and Gold Plated

Solid Gold Jewelry

This may shock some, but solid gold jewelry is not typically 100% pure gold but is rather a metal alloy. The metal alloy is simply a term for 2 or more types of metals together. Pure gold by itself is too soft to withstand the normal abuses of everyday living. This means it will lose its shape over time. 24k gold jewelry is rare for this reason, and it’s normally reserved for non-jewelry pieces since 24k gold is essentially pure gold.

18k Gold – High-end pieces will often be 18k gold, which has a beautiful luster and will last a lifetime. Gold also will never tarnish or discolor, not from water, soap, and sweat. This level of gold jewelry is often reserved for rings, necklaces, and earrings that you’ll wear when you go to a gala or an event. Showing it off is half the fun!

14k Gold – 14k gold jewelry is perfect for a “daily driver,” giving you both the looks and luster of fine gold jewelry but at a much more affordable cost. We have a large selection of 14k gold jewelry, which is always changing!

Gold Plated Jewelry

There are several types of gold plating. Gold Vermeil (pronounced Ver-May) is the top of the line when it comes to gold-plated jewelry, This is the result of what’s called “electroplating,” a process by which solid gold is plated to a piece of jewelry made only from sterling silver (part of what makes it the highest quality non-solid gold jewelry). When the current is run through them, the solid gold plates to the metal.

Gold Filled – Gold filled, not as its name suggests, is actually filled with gold but is instead added to an item made from silver, brass, copper, or other base metals. The gold content is typically only 5%, and there are no quality marks to indicate a karat level.

Gold plated – goes a step further and has a very thin layer of gold attached to the outside.

All of these gold-plated pieces will eventually wear off and need to be re-plated – depending on your usage and habits, of course!

Diamond rings, diamond engagement rings, necklaces, and pendants.

Nothing is quite like a diamond. Our gemologists have the skills and expertise to buy, sell and trade high-quality diamonds of all carat sizes. We often have very unique vintage jewelry with diamonds and gemstones. We have a vast selection of diamond engagement rings, diamond wedding bands, and other fine diamond jewelry for those who are getting engaged.

Platinum jewelry

Among the most expensive type of precious metals to use in jewelry pieces, platinum takes fine jewelry to the next level. From platinum rings, necklaces and pendants, platinum jewelry comes in all forms.

There can also be special runs and sets from brands like Tiffany & Co, Tivol, David Yurman, and more.

Sterling silver rings, necklaces, and pendants.

Sterling silver jewelry is a staple in jewelry stores and allows for great-looking pieces at a fraction of the cost that gold and platinum variants would be. Often we have a great selection of sterling silver rings, earrings that have turquoise, and other adornments.

Silver jewelry will always have value because it is, of course, made with silver! So even if the jewelry goes out of style, the spot weight value of the silver will always be there.
